Context

Sissi Club is a contemporary art gallery founded in Marseille in 2019 by curators Élise Poitevin and Anne Vimeux. Initially created as a project space to support emerging practices, the program gradually expanded with both local and international invitations.

In 2022, the space adopted the gallery model in order to sustain relationships with a constellation of represented artists. Its curatorial vision emphasizes practices that operate between research and fiction, and that explore space and bodies in political ways — through decolonial, queer, inclusive and ecological perspectives.

Sissi Club is part of the Comité Professionnel des Galeries d’Art and the PAC network.

Goals

• Build a site on Elementor to match a tighter budget.
• Enable simple contribution for curators with minimal training.
• Highlight exhibitions, events, and artists in a clean and accessible layout.
• Balance visual impact with maintainability and performance.

Technical setup

• Built on WordPress with Elementor, allowing drag-and-drop editing.
• Custom styles and overrides to avoid “template look.”
• Optimized image handling (compression, responsive sizes, lazy loading).
• Performance tuning: stripped down plugins, caching enabled, minimal overhead.
• Accessible structure: semantic headings, ARIA roles, alt text enforced.

Looking forward

While Elementor was a pragmatic choice at the time, today we would recommend alternatives such as Bricks Builder, which delivers significantly better performance: cleaner HTML output, lighter DOM, and improved loading times.

As websites evolve over time, we do not provide ongoing maintenance for this project, meaning we cannot control the site’s long-term footprint or third-party modifications. Still, our approach remains focused on lightweight, accessible, and sustainable solutions.

We are set to collaborate again with Sissi Club soon, this time with an updated technical foundation that will bring both more performance and more editorial freedom.

Result

A gallery site that stays simple, efficient, and easy to update, while reflecting the strong curatorial identity of Sissi Club. It offers the team autonomy and flexibility, without sacrificing clarity and performance.
